Will the stadium be a campaign issue?

New York City Comptroller William Thompson thinks Mayor Mike Bloomberg wants to get the Westside stadium approved before the election. Here is the final stadium question for Thompson from WNBC-TV reporter Gabe Pressman from last Sunday. Thompson is considered a potential democratic candidate for mayor of NYC next year.<p>

PRESSMAN: You think that the West Side stadium is going to be an issue in the mayoral election of 2005?

Comp. THOMPSON: Possibly. Even though, in the end, by the time we get to that election, if you look at the timetable that the mayor's tried to set up, and the deputy mayor, Doctoroff, has pushed forward, they'd like to see ground broken by next April on a stadium. They have tied it directly to the Olympics and the Olympics of 2012.

So I think there are a lot of issues that are going to have to be dealt with when it comes to a stadium, when it comes to the West Side. I'm not going to necessarily make a decision [right now].
