Jets news and notes

The Jets named their former left tackle Jumbo Elliott assistant offensive line coach on Tuesday.

Among other things, Elliott is going to help the team develop their young offensive line prospects. However, the 36- year-old Elliott still works out six days a week and is tremendous shape, so you have to wonder if the Jets suffered an injury at offensive tackle, would they consider activating Elliott? The answer is "no" because they aren't allowed to.

Call it the "George Allen rule". The former Redskins coach used to hire veteran players as assistant coaches and then activate them if there were injuries. The league put in a rule to stop this practice. Herman Edwards knows this first hand. When he was the Chiefs secondary coach, they were banged up at cornerback entering a Buffalo playoff game, and Marty Shottenheimer considered activating him, but the league told the team they couldn't.

When former NFL cornerback Dale Carter was cleared last month to play again after a year-long suspension, the Jets were one of the team's interested in signing him. We hear the Jets were Carter's number one choice. Remember he started his career in Kansas City where Herman Edwards was his secondary coach.

Edwards did the lion's share of the scouting of Carter at Tennessee and was the driving force behind the Chiefs picking the talented defensive back in the first round of the 1992 draft. The two have a close relationship and Carter wanted to unite with his old mentor. But Edwards decided against it. He didn't want to hurt the team's chemistry and didn't want to show disrespect to the teams current set of corners who are playing well now. Carter ended up signing with the Minnesota Vikings to join his brother, wide receiver Jake Reed.

But signing Carter was awfully tempting for Edwards. He considers Carter the most athletic cornerback he's ever been around.

Guard Randy Thomas returned to practice this week and should play unless he has a setback. He has missed the last month with a high ankle sprain. He says it's going to take 6-8 months for him to totally heal from the injury.

The Jets were passing downfield a lot during the bye-week and expect them to open up their passing game down the stretch of the season. The Jets coaches think that speed merchant Santana Moss is going to open up the underneath passing game for Wayne Chrebet and Laveranues Coles to do a lot of damage.
