Strong safety Reggie Tongue missed his third straight day of practice due to a calf injury. Fifth round pick Erik Coleman filled in once again. While Coleman has a lot of potential, he doesn't look like a regular season starting candidate just yet. Tongue will likely be the starter on opening day . . .

Wide receiver Lawrence Hamilton (hamstring) was held out of the afternoon practice. When the Jets signed him off the Bengals practice squad late last year, it looked like he had a future with the team, but now his chances don't look very good. Another candidate for the last wide receiver spot, Ken-Yon Rambo, missed practice again today. He has missed all of training camp with a hamstring injury . . .
Wide receiver Jonathan Carter has been one of the stars of training camp thus far. He made a leaping catch over Coleman today in the end zone.
"Jonathan Carter is a different guy than he was last year," said Jets offensive coordinator Paul Hackett . . .
The rock group, Linkin Park, was at practice today. They are performing at Jones Beach Theater tonight . . .
Chris Baker continues to display soft hands and had a pretty catch in the back of the end zone. JC asked Herman Edwards today if Baker is competing for the starting job, and Jets coach wouldn't commit to that.
"We have two very good tight ends who help our offense," said Edwards . . .
Third year tailback Jonathan Reese looked very good today. He looks quicker than he has in the past. He had a terrific cutback run for a big gain in practice . . .
Former Jets center Dennis O'Sullivan signed with the Houston Texans . . .
