The only hope Rambo has of making the team is if there are any injuries, and that could happen considering #1 receiver Santana Moss and Carter are both injury prone, and are actually banged up right now. Moss has a hamstring injury and Carter, a knee . . .
The preseason game at New Orleans is a big game for rookie Erik Coleman. If he plays well, he could really help his push to take over Reggie Tongue's starting strong safety job. Tongue didn't make the trip due to a calf injury, and has been on the sidelines since the first day of training camp . . .
With weakside linebacker Eric Barton not making the trip, it's possible Jonathan Vilma could see action at that position and at middle linebacker. The highly-intelligent Vilma is doing a good job of learning both positions . . .
This will be the first game Jets coach Herman Edwards will have a clock management coach by his side. This off-season, Edwards moved tight end coach Dick Curl to a position where he will deal with clock management issues.
"Most of the time (he will be next to me on the sidelines.)," said Edwards of Curl. "We will be in communication. We both have sheets on the sidelines to keep in constant communication. It will be a process. We will learn during the preseason the best way we can function together and I think that will be a lot of fun for us." . . .
With Moss hurt, Justin McCareins will be the starting punt returner. He did an excellent job last year in that role for the Tennessee Titans. You could make the argument the Jets have two of the top 10 punt returners in the league on their roster in Moss and McCareins. Also getting work at punt returner will be running backs Ian Smart and Josh Davis and possibly cornerback Rod Bryant . . .
Edwards hasn't decided yet whether he wants defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson in the press box or on the sidelines during games, so the team is going to experiment with both during the preseason. In New Orleans, Henderson will be in the press box.
