Gowin injured/Simnjavovski signed

The leading candidate to handle the punting chores for the Jets this year, Toby Gowin, was injured on Wednesday. He suffered a groin injury.<p>

With Gowin going down, the Jets re-signed punter Brian Simnjanovski, who was released earlier in the week.

Tampa Bay also called Simjanovski, but he decided to take the Jets' offer. Obviously if Gowin is out for a while, the Jets could offer Simnjanovski a better chance to make an NFL roster.

But at the very least, he will get a chance to punt a lot the next couple of preseason games to show other teams what he can do.

"He has a good chance to showcase himself this weekend," said Jets coach Herman Edwards.

Simnjanovski is considered an excellent kickoff guy, and that is one of the things that attracted the Jets to him initially. Kickoffs were a weakness for the Jets last year.

Simnjanovski had a rough debut as a Jet last weekend, punting for 13 yards on his only attempt.

"He wanted a chance to redeem himself for last week, and will have a chance to do it," said Edwards.
