The most surprising cut was Burnell, who might have been the Jets most impressive runner in the Jets 31-7 win over the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday night. He rushed three times for 22 yards, good for a 7.3 average. Burnell's performance caught the eye of Jets coach Herman Edwards who praised the running back during his Sunday conference call with reporters.
"Keith Burnell flashed last night," said Edwards. "How about that guy? We just picked him up and all of sudden he is breaking tackles and running. He had some pretty good runs."
Burnell, 5-11, 205 pounds, who was signed on August 15, spent a brief amount of time on the Jets' practice squad last season.
The release of Burnell proves that most personnel decisions are made by teams before training camp starts.
