Jets sign eight

<P>The New York Jets announced today the signing of 8 players to their 2002 roster. The list includes all 5 members of their final 2001 practice squad. </P>

WR Corey Alston, S Todd Franz, RB Marlion Jackson, TE David Newman and S Ryan Szokola were on the Jets season-ending practice squad.

The Jets also added PK Danny Boyd, DL Toby Golliday and QB Gus Ornstein to the active roster.

Boyd, a 5-11, 216-pound place-kicker from LSU, has never kicked in the NFL. He most recently played in Arena 2 with Baton Rouge where he was successful on 12 of 34 field goal attempts.

Golliday, a 6-2, 330-pound DL from Mississippi State, posted 80 tackles and 2 sacks in 22 games with the Bulldogs from 1999-2000. He originally signed with the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent on April 27, 2001. The 27-year-old Ornstein, a 6-3, 225-pound free agent from Rowan, grew up in Tenafly, New Jersey and attended Fieldston High School in the Bronx. Ornstein played last season in NFL Europe with the Scottish Claymores (18-33-157-1-1).

PRACTICE SQUAD MEMBERS ELEVATED TO 2002 ROSTER Corey Alston: 6-1, 213-pound WR - 1st Year Free Agent, Western Michigan - finished second in school history in receiving yards (2,456) and touchdowns (25) Todd Franz: 6-2, 198-pound S - 1st Year Free Agent, Tulsa - recorded 182 tackles and five interceptions Marlion Jackson: 6-2, 240-pound RB - 1st Year Free Agent, Saginaw Valley State - career totals of 2,315 rushing yards and 34 touchdowns David Newman: 6-6, 245-pound TE - 1st Year Free Agent, Louisiana Tech - posted 54 career receptions for 559 yards and 9 TD Ryan Szokola: 6-1, 203-pound S - 1st Year Free Agent, Illinois State - played in more games than anyone in school history (44) and ranks fourth all-time in tackles (367)
