An early look at the draft

Q: If the Jets were to select a cornerback in the first round (Pick #26) who would be available?<p>

A: Cornerback could quickly become a draft-day favorite this year, as an early run on that position would not be a great surprise to anyone. In fact, Miami's ANTRELL ROLLE, West Virginia's ADAM "PAC MAN" JONES and Auburn's CARLOS ROGERS... could all be off the board in the first 15 selections. If that were to occur, the Jets could be put in an interesting situation, as there is another group of 3-5 prospects that could easily slip into the late first round, but could also be sporting third round grades on other team's boards. Michigan's MARLIN JACKSON... LSU's COREY WEBSTER... Clemson's JUSTIN MILLER... Florida State's BRYANT MCFADDEN and Oregon State's BRANDON BROWNER are all names that could surface between picks 20-32 if there is an early run on cornerbacks. Miller would give them an addition dimension, as he is a fine return man... both Jackson and Webster had great initial college careers, but did not play as well this season... McFadden has very good coverage skills, but with good, not great recovery speed... while Browner is a "Wild Card" entry... he's 6'3", 204 pounds... some believe he can be a shutdown corner in the league, while others say he could be a tease like Willie Middlebrooks has been with the Broncos. If the Jets pass on a cornerback in round one the next best candidates would include Howard's RONALD BARTELL... LSU's TRAVIS DANIELS... Nebraska's FABIAN WASHINGTON... Virginia Tech's ERIC GREEN... and MARYLAND's DOMONIQUE FOXWORTH...

Q: If the Jets were to select a tight end in the first round (Pick #26) who would be available?

A: Virginia junior tight end HEATH MILLER is considered the top pass-catcher in this year's crop of talent... he has good size (6'4", 255 pounds), terrific hands and the ability to gain yardage after the catch. He will not run a great 40-time, but many feel that he can become a similar pro to the Baltimore Ravens Todd Heap... Miller is expected to be picked between the mid-to-late first round, so the Jets might have to deal up if they want him. Miami's KEVIN EVERETT, who could be the "Workout Warrior" of this group at the Combine and Stanford's ALEX SMITH would earn second round grades, as of today, but the Jets might be willing to use a late first rounder on their talents... should they pass on tight end early, the names to watch for include VICTOR SESAY (Missouri), ADAM BERGEN (Lehigh), BILLY BAJEMA (Oklahoma State) and JEROME COLLINS (Notre Dame)...
