Analysis of Putzier situation

On Thursday, the Denver Broncos matchup the 5- year, $12.5 offer sheet the Jets gave to their third year tight end Jeb Putzier.<p>

But this doesn't mean that Putzier won't eventually be a New York Jet.

According to an NFL source, the Jets and Broncos are in trade talks involving Putzier.

Aside from the sixth round pick the Broncos would receive since Putzier was given a sixth round tender, Denver wants another draft pick as well.

According to a couple of published reports, the Broncos would like to get a third round pick, and the Jets are willing to give up a fifth round selection. So it's possible the teams could meet in the middle and agree on a fourth rounder.

The Broncos have talked to free agent tight ends Itula Mili (Seattle) and Stephen Alexander (Detroit) as possible replacements for Putzier if they decided to trade him to New York.

But it's also possible the Broncos will decide to keep Putzier, who is clearly a player on the rise. The team's front office advised the Broncos public relations department to prepare a press release today announcing that the team had matched the Jets offer sheet. This could mean the team intends to keep the tight end.

You get the sense a source close to Putzier, that the tight end would prefer to play for the Jets. The Jets new offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger is putting in an offense that heavily involves tight ends in the passing game. Also the Putzier camp sees better marketing opportunities for the tight end playing in New York.

The tight end actually flew to the New York area on Thursday. However this had nothing to do with a potential trade to the Jets. He is attending a charity event in Connecticut.
