Home Sweet Home

The new starting left guard has arrived to replace Kerry Jenkins and his name is Dave Szott.

The free agent G has been signed to a three-year, $4.2 million deal including a $690,000 signing bonus by the New York Jets. After 12 seasons in the league, the 34 year old Szott is finally coming home.

As it was reported earlier, the Jets were a very attractive team to Szott because his son Shane has cerebral palsy and receives treatment in New Jersey. The Jets took this into account and arranged Szott's contract in a way that shows how classy the new regime truly is. Szott will reportedly be allowed to leave following games and not have to rejoin the team until Wednesday morning for meetings and practice. Szott will stay in a hotel from Wednesday through Friday and will only be required to report to the Jets in the morning on game days or when the team leaves for road trips. Special arrangements were also made for Shane to come to games to see his father play.

There was a strong connection with Szott all along as Jets' GM Terry Bradway, Head Coach Herman Edwards, Offensive Coordinator Paul Hackett, and Senior Offensive Assistant Jimmy Raye spent many seasons on the same Kansas City Chiefs team as Szott. With the addition of Szott at LG, the Jets have been the most active team in the free agent signing period to date.

The Jets have added 4 new starters in OLB Sam Cowart, CB Aaron Beasley, SS Sam Garnes, and LG Dave Szott. DE Steve White is also a potential starter but will most likely end up being a motivator for Shaun Ellis. Most people would expect things at Weeb Ewbank Hall to quiet down for a while as the team concentrates on the 2002 NFL Draft...Well April 20th is still a month away Jets fans.....

In The News....After calling the Tampa Bay Bucs' bluff on a trade involving a 2nd round draft pick for Donnie Abraham, the Bucs outright released the talented cornerback this past Thursday. Abraham's agent Jack Reale said the Jets were among a few teams that called to inquire...Stay tuned...Not one to be left out of the headlines, free agent DT Shane Burton's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said he will resume talks with the Jets about re-signing his client at the owners' meetings on Monday.
