Wednesday notebook: Curtis Martin right on track

Early in camp, Jets coach Herman Edwards said he wanted to give Curtis Martin 22 carries in the preseason, the same amount of carries as last summer.

But since he only has eight after two games, he's not likely going to make it to that number. He will likely get 6-7 carries against the Football Giants, and then none against the Eagles. But Edwards feels this won't be a problem because he had a heavier workload in practice then last year . . .

After missing the Tuesday practices with a stomach virus, Cornerback Ty Law was back at practice on Wednesday after taking antibiotics. He looked good running stride-for-stride with rookie wideout Eddie Jackson on a deep ball. Law should play against the Giants on Friday . . .

Donnie Henderson continues to be on the warpath with the defensive backs, but Edwards thinks the players he has been yelling at should feel fortunate.

"When he stops yelling at a guy, and stops coaching him, they need to call their agent," said Edwards. "That means you are going to get cut." . . .

All week rookie Kerry Rhodes has been starting ahead of Erik Coleman at strong safety. So who is going to start against the Giants?

"It depends on Donnie's mood," said Edwards.

Expect Rhodes to start against the Giants, but Coleman will likely start in Kansas City. Henderson is clearly sending Coleman a message . . .

The Jets have eight practices left before their opener in Kansas City . . .

Wide receiver Carl Kearney has had a quietly impressive camp. He made a spectacular one-handed catch in the morning practice. He isn't a bad player for a guy who had two catches as a senior at Georgia Southern . . .

It looks like Ben Graham is a heavy favorite to win the punting job. He unleashed two amazing punts to start off the morning practice . . .

The Jets waived Xavier Beitia this morning to make room for linebacker James Kinney, who they claimed off waivers from Jacksonville. But based on the way Beitia kicked in camp this summer, he looks like he might have a future in the league . . .

The Jets aren't saying how serious the shoulder injury to Cedric Houston is, but he didn't practice on Wednesday, and will not play against the Giants. Expect to see a lot of Little John Flowers in the second half of the Giants game.
