The Jets' 1999 team slogan "Start over" rings true once again. The team's offseason work is not complete with the rebuilding of the defense...There is still the matter of the NFL Draft and the salary cap. The easiest way to get the second matter under control will be to lower QB Vinny Testaverde's enormous cap hit of $9 million.
Rich Cimini of the Daily News is reporting that the Jets and Azzarelli are discussing starting Testaverde's deal all over again, and with a sense of urgency. It is speculated that they would like to get the deal done before the NFL Draft on April 20th.
If it is not eventually redone and Vinny's veteran minimum $750,000 contract does in fact near the salary escalating date of June 4th, there will be significant salary cap work to be done. This is over a month away and highly unlikely however. Jets' GM Terry Bradway when asked about the renegotiating was quoted saying, "It'll get done."
Quick Hit: Steve Serby of the NY Post reports the Jets have turned their attention towards free-agent DT Sam Adams [Baltimore Ravens]. Adams was released as a part of the Ravens' salary cap purge this offseason.
