Sounds like Edwards is out of here!

There is a very good chance Herman Edwards is going to be the next coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. Rumors are flying around the NFL that he will replace Dick Vermeil after this season. During Edwards' news conference on Wednesday he was asked a myriad of questions about the rumors, and here are some of his responses:

Q)Have you addressed the rumors about you leaving with the players?

Edwards: No. That's the good thing about the players, they know their head coach. I always say, "Don't get distracted by the distractions." They know how I feel about them, they know the situation. We just get ready to play.

Q)Would you address the team if the rumors were distracting the players?

Edwards: If I felt it was distracting the team, but it's not at all. You can tell the way they're playing; it's not distracting these guys. We got a good team we're playing against this week. That's our focus. That's what we talked about in the meeting today. Got nothing to do with me, trust me. I'm not that important. It's about the team, always about the team. It's always been that way since I've been here. It's going to stay that way.

Q)What will your decision be based on?

Edwards: You have to make sure you're doing the right thing and you're living what you talk. Your integrity shows now. That's important for me to keep that and to make sure I'm doing things the right way because I always tell them to do it the right way. I'm the example now because of what's going on with our season, the rumors that are flying. They're watching me to see how I handle it. I'm going to make sure I handle it the right way.

Q)How would you handle leaving with the players?

Edwards: I would talk to them. Just like when I left Tampa to come here. I called them all in the room and I talked to all of them one by one. That's what I would do, talk to the team.

Q)Do you intent on finishing your contract?

Edwards: I'm going to be here as far as I'm concerned. At this point right today, I'm going to be here.

Q)Are you happy to be back next year under your existing contract?

Edwards: I don't talk about stuff like that. I'm happy to be here. I'm going to be here. That's it. We don't talk about those things. You know that. That's our policy. We never have. We won't start doing it now. I don't intend to do that. I intend to be the coach now.

Q)What would you think if the team moves on?

Edwards: At the end, if I'm not holding up my bargain or they feel they need to go in another direction, they got to do that. They have to do whatever is best for the team. I'm okay with that, I really am. Whatever is best for this organization, they have to do. So be it. I won't stand in anybody's way. I won't do that.

Q)How would you feel about the possibility that you would be leaving on a down year?

Edwards: Well, you feel you had a goal coming in here and you didn't quite reach it. That happens sometimes in life. If that should be (the case), I will feel bad for this organization. I would feel bad for the players. But then I also know that I did everything I could to not let that happen. That's the way it goes. Then you move on.

Q)Have you talked to Dick Vermeil about the rumors?

Edwards: No. We don't talk about that. I talk to him every Tuesday. Phone call, we talk every Tuesday. It won't be a conversation. We don't talk about that.
