Q)Who will call the defenses during the game?
Mangini: I am sure I will have some imput on the calls, but anybody that I hire as [defensive coordinator] I will obviously respect their football intelligence.
Q)Are you leaning towards playing the 3-4 or the 4-3 defense?
Mangini: We are going to play whatever gives us the best chance to win. Whether it's 3-4 or 4-3, whatever it is, if it's going to help us beat our opponent that's what we're going to play.
Q)Bill Belichick had final say on all personnel matters in New England Will that be the case here?
Mangini: This is a team effort – 100 percent. I'm going to work with Terry as much as I can. He's going to work with me as much as he can so we can get the right players for the system and build moving forward. Terry has final say on all personnel matters.
Q)What do you say to people who say you are too young?
Mangini: Bill Walsh said you are never quite ready for first head coaching job regardless of how old you are. I think that's true. I think the same thing is true with parenting. I am not naïve to think there won't be bumps in the road. We're going to learn from our mistakes and make sure that they don't happen again. I have been a coach for 11 years. I have been on three Super Bowl winning teams. I have been with two of the greatest football minds in NFL history.
Q)Is is true that Bill Belichick tried to talk you out of taking this job?
Mangini: It never got into that area. Bill and I are the best of friends. We had a great conversation last night. It never got to that point. He really wants what is best for me and my family. We will be friends for a long time.
Q)Will you be retaining some of the Jets assistants?
Mangini: There are a lot of good coaches on the staff and I am very sensitive to the situation they are in, being an assistant. They want to know as much about their future as they possibly can, and quickly as they can, and we will be moving forward with the staff over the next couple of days.
