The Jets have signed 1st-round draft pick Bryan Thomas to a 4 year, $6.6 million contract.
The Jets made sure their first pick DE Bryan Thomas would be competing hard in training camp by locking him up with a four-year deal Wednesday. The contract includes $4 million in guaranteed bonuses, a lot for a player not expected to start immediately. Thomas is only the 2nd player from the 2002 Draft to be signed after David Carr, the #1 overall selection.
Here are some highlights from Wednesday's press conference:
Dick Haley, Senior Personnel Scout: "He has great speed and he's naturally strong, and he's quick and has good rush moves. He's got the tools and he uses them."
Coach Edwards: "He's going to be a tremendous player in our league. It's going to be steps at a time. Like I said last year, the weight of New York is not on Bryan's shoulders. We don't expect Bryan to go out here and set a NFL sack record. If he does, that's great. All he has to do is do his job, his role, and we'll be fine. And I expect him to do that."
Bryan Thomas: "I'm actually very happy to get my deal done before training camp starts. I'll be able to go out there and contend for a position. I just want to thank the Jets, thank everybody else for giving me this opportunity for being out here. As far as the contract and being ready, I'm happy."
