Murphy on two new Jets

On Friday, the Jets signed two players, Brown fullback Nick Hartigan and Rowan wide receiver Phil Silva. They also announced the release of running back Dontrell Moore. Here is the take of draft insider John Murphy on the two new players:

Nick Hartigan, FB, Brown... Highly-productive running back in the Ivy League who converted to fullback in the post-season... rushed for 1,727 yards as a senior... great effort player that gave a good account of himself at the East-West Shrine Game... average speed, but has good hands... will need to develop as a blocker, but fits the West Coast style offense... smart, instinctive football player that could also do well on special teams... likely candidate for a tour in NFL Europe next spring.

Phil Silva, WR, Rowan... Local Division III prospect that was a big-play threat last season... caught 46 passes for 681 yards and nine touchdowns, which led the team... he was eyed by several teams after the draft, including the Eagles, Giants, Ravens and Jets... offered a chance to workout for the Jets last week, and impressed the squad with his size, straight-line speed and ability to learn the plays quickly... has excellent size, 6-foot-3, 220 pounds, and averaged nearly 15 yards per catch as a senior... good upside thanks to his size, but would likely be looked upon as a practice squad candidate after playing against DIII competition.
