Ferguson, a 6-6, 312-pound product of the University of Virginia, was selected by the Jets with the fourth overall selection in the first round of the 2006 NFL draft. While at Virginia, Ferguson garnered numerous honors including, All-American first-team selections by The NFL Draft Report and Associated Press and second-team honors from the Walter Camp Football Foundation and Sports Illustrated. He received first-team All-ACC honors and was also named ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week for his play vs. Georgia Tech. He was honored by the Touchdown Club of Richmond as their Offensive Lineman of the Year in the state of Virginia.
The Freeport, Long Island native spent four years at Virginia, starting all 49 games he appeared in, a streak unmatched by any Virginia offensive lineman. He also became the only player in school history to start four bowl games at left tackle, including a win in the 2005 Music City Bowl.
