A heaping helping of Saturday practice notes

UConn basketball coach Jim Calhoun addressed the Jets on Friday night.

One thing he emphasized was the importance of not being outworked by any other team . . .

The Jets put rookie tight end Jason Pociask was put on injured reserve with a shoulder injury. He injured his shoulder very early in camp. The Jets are in good shape at tight end with Chris Baker, Doug Jolley and Joel Dreessen. So barring another injury at the position, they should be okay without Pociask this season . . .

Safety Erik Coleman continues to battle an undisclosed illness. He didn't accompany the team on their two day trip to the Meadowlands for a pair of practices. With a stiff battle at safety, this is really hurting Coleman's chances of starting the opener. The Jets are very high on rookie Erik Smith, and he could end up starting. Smith had the hit-of-the-day in Saturday's practice . . .

Running back Curtis Martin did make the trip to New Jersey, but wasn't in attendance at practice. He continues to rehab his surgical knee and work on his conditioning . . .

According to an NFL source, the Jets are on the market for another running back. They are clearly a little concerned about Martin, as well as their depth at the position. They were interested in former Titan Damien Nash, but he signed with Denver. Players who could interest the Jets are Chris Brown (Titans), Thomas Jones (Bears) and Lee Suggs (Browns) . . .

If Adrian Jones wins the starting job at right tackle, the Jets are going to have perhaps the most athletic pair of tackles in the NFL with Jones and D'Brickashaw Ferguson. Remember Jones, a former college tight end at Kansas, ran a 4.96 forty at the combine, which is great for an offensive tackle. And Ferguson is one of the most athletic offensive tackles to come out the last few years . . .

Brooks Bollinger was the Jets starting quarterback on Saturday, and aside throwing a pick to linebacker Jon Vilma, looked good. He and tight end Chris Baker did some good work together . . .

With a couple of defensive tackles sidelined, rookie free agent Brennan Schmidt is seeing a lot of action, and has done some good things. The Virginia product had a QB pressure at the Meadowlands . . .

The crowd of a little of 5,000 at the practice, went wild every time quarterback Chad Pennington got in the lineup . . .

For some reason, Ben Graham struggled mightily punting in the Meadowlands. Perhaps the field turf at the Meadowlands threw off his timing . . .

It was a glaring need, but the Jets didn't sign or draft a speed receiver this off-season. The teams lack of speed at wideout hurt them last year, and it continues to be a problem this summer. The Jets wideouts just aren't getting a lot of separation . . .

Linebacker Trevor Johnson continues to show what a good fit he is for the 3-4 defense. He dropped into coverage Saturday, and picked off a pass . . .

Wide receiver Dante Ridgeway was limping around the practice field on Saturday with a bulky knee brace. He doesn't look like he's coming back anytime soon . . .
