The thumb on his throwing hand is bruised with some swelling on the inside. Coach Edwards wouldn't say how long he felt Vinny would be out, but when asked whether he could miss the team's first preseason game next Thursday, he said, "I'm not ruling that out." Vinny appeared to be a lot more optimistic, and expects to be back in practice on Friday. He told reporters, "If we had a game coming up this Sunday, I would play and wouldn't miss a beat." Vinny said he had the mildest case of this kind of injury, which can keep a player out for up to a month…LB Sam Cowart and WR Laveranues Coles were held out of practice again this morning. Cowart is still recovering from a tweaked hamstring, while Coles continues to rest his sore heal…G Randy Thomas can now participate in all walk through drills during practice. He will not wear pads or participates in full-contact drills…This has been the daily regimen for C Kevin Mawae, who is recovering from shoulder surgery, and not expected to go full-contact for another few weeks…Herm Edwards has said that T Jumbo Elliot will only practice once a day in order to ensure his chronically bad back doesn't flair up…G David Vigir, who has been hobbled this summer with a lower leg problem, will be out for the next month. He was competing with TE James Dearth for the long snapper position…Coach Edwards felt QB Chad Pennington had a very good practice this morning with the first unit…Arena League transplant Mike Furry is impressing coaches with his play at wide receiver and special teams…The coaching staff has also felt that CB Ray Mickens is having an excellent camp, and that G J.P. Machado has played well at center, filling in for the injured C Kevin Mawae.
The New York Jets will host their second annual "Pepsi New York Family Night" tonight (Wednesday, July 31) at the Mitchel Field Athletic Complex in Uniondale, NY. Festivities will begin at 5:30pm with Jets Fest, the team's interactive theme park, followed by a regular training camp practice under the lights at 7:30pm. All activities are free of charge to the public.
