Jets Ready for Preseason Opener

The New York Jets traveled to Pittsburgh today for tomorrow night's game against the Steelers

Coach Herm Edwards addressed the media today about dividing up the playing time…Vinny Testaverde will get the start at quarterback, but will only see one or two series…Backup quarterback Chad Pennington will play the rest of the first half, and third string quarterback, and special teams player, Tory Woodbury will finish the game…Coach Edwards and the Jet coaching staff are concerned about the dangerous Steeler defense getting through the inexperienced offensive line. The line will be without G Randy Thomas and T Jumbo Elliott, who will make the trip, but be held out due to injury…LB Sam Cowart, G Dave Szott, G David Viger and DE John Abraham will not make the trip…Coach Edwards said he is looking to see how his young players perform….He will give WR Santana Moss two quarters in the game. He will also be paying close attention to Rookie DE Bryan Thomas, particularly his ability to stop the run…Most of the starting unit will see anywhere from 1 series, to 10-12 snaps…When asked if he was frustrated over LB Sam Cowart missing almost all of practice to this point, Coach Edwards said that Cowart was way ahead of schedule, and his original Achilles injury from a year ago was supposed to keep him out until now anyway.
