Jones Update

LB Marvin Jones was in pads this afternoon, but did not participate in contact drills.

The shot to the throat he took in the morning session has made it difficult for him to talk. LB James Darling started at middle linebacker in Jones' place. Darling started some games at middle linebacker with the Eagles, before coming to the Jets…LB Sam Cowart was in practice this afternoon, completing his first 2-a-day of training camp. Herm Edwards said that Cowart has a lot of catching up to do after missing so much time. He has to learn the system, but most importantly, he just needs playing time…Rookie DT Alan Harper is in a tough situation. He did not play in Thursday's game against Pittsburgh, and has been struggling to find playing time with Larry Webster, James Reed and Giradie Mercer all in front of him. As the 6th DT, Harper is in danger of not making the team. Edwards said that he hopes Harper doesn't psych himself out, knowing the odds are against him. "After the first preseason game, if they don't get some reps, they feel like ‘I'm gone,' and then they start practicing like that, and they kind of phase themselves out. He's too good of a player to do that."…C Kevin Mawae was back in pads this afternoon, but continues to sit out of contact drills while recovering from offseason shoulder surgery. Edwards said Mawae will wear pads even though he's not participating, in order to get comfortable with the feel of pads again…FB Jerald Sowell was back in practice this afternoon after injuring his left hamstring this morning…It was a nice afternoon for the wide receivers in practice today. Kevin Swayne had a nice catch off of a Chad Pennington pass, Kory Bailey had a good catch off of a slant pattern and Santana Moss had a nice leaping grab over the middle. But Laveranues Coles had perhaps the nicest play of the afternoon. Coles showed off his speed by blazing past CB Aaron Beasley to catch a Pennington Bomb down the sideline for a touchdown… Pennington was hitting his targets all day today, and throwing a good deep ball…Conversely, QB Tory Woodbury had a terrible afternoon practice, throwing an interception to FS Damien Robinson and another to LB Scott Bradley…QB Vinny Testaverde continues to participate in only the morning practices. His thumb gets sore with the constant pressure and pounding of receiving snaps.
