Steelers cut Porter - Jets could jump on him

If the Jets don't make a bee-line for free agent linebacker Joey Porter it would be a major surprise.

Under their new coach Mike Tomlin, the Steelers are switching from the 3-4 to the 4-3 defense, so Porter became expendable. He was cut on Thursday.

He is what the Jets 3-4 defense is in desperate need of - an dynamic pass rushing outside linebacker. Porter, 30, clearly has a few good years left, and it would be shocking if Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum doesn't reach out to him.

Not only is Porter a top-shelf 3-4 OLB, but a terrific leader, something that is very important to Tannenbaum and Jets coach Eric Mangini.
