Draft Insider John Murphy on David Harris

Murphy: He is a solid if not spectacular all-around prospect that has steadily improved his grade throughout his senior campaign . . .

He is the type of player that grows on you the more that you watch his game films; very consistent week in and week out… has a few limitations in pass coverage, better in zone than man-to-man… terrific natural instincts, especially adept at diagnosing the play quickly, making the proper pre-snap read and then keeping the defenders around him in the right place… does not get out of position on misdirection plays, but sometimes lacks the foot speed to make the tackle on plays run to the wide side of the field… will compete very well and plays hard on each down… like the intangibles he brings to the position and that he will be a good character player for the locker room… has improved his overall athleticism thanks to the training regiment he has been on at the Parisi Center; is now expected to potentially run 4.55 or better in the 40… and according to them he had improved in all areas of the combine workout, while maintaining his weight and strength, as well… there are several teams in need of pure inside linebacker, which is where Harris fits best for the next level… he can be productive playing the middle in a base 4-3 system or even inside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme; his only weakness would come if asked stick most running backs or tight ends in man coverage on third downs… could be removed in certain third-down situations early in his career, but he has the type of work ethic and dedication to improve as a pass defender over time… based on how the inside linebacker market plays out in free agency I expect Harris will make a hard charge up into the early portion of the second round.
