Thomas Under Investigation

DE Bryan Thomas is being investigated by the Port Authority Police and the Queens District Attorney for his involvement in an alleged dispute at LaGuardia Airport on Tuesday.

Thomas was believed to have been in a dispute with his girlfriend, who reported the incident to the police. No formal charges have been filed. Herm Edwards said the Jets organization was still gathering information and he did not want to comment until he had all the facts.

The Jets want to get DT Larry Webster into the starting rotation more, and are going to rotate him in with DT Josh Evans. Evans is going to get more chances on third down situations, so that the Jets can utilize his pass rushing abilities. When Evans is in on third downs, DE Shaun Ellis, who usually plays in the middle on third downs, will slide over to the outside. Ellis will be in a rotation with DE Bryan Thomas in those situations.

Thomas is showing signs of fatigue already, as is the tendency with rookies. He played the majority of the time in all four preseason games, and has been given a lot of work in special teams during the season. For him, it feels like he's played six games already.

Edwards is confident that rookie safety Jon McGraw can handle the starting free safety job against Miami, if Damien Robinson is unable to go. Robinson has been upgraded to questionable with the groin injury, but Edwards said his gut feeling is that McGraw will start. The Jets have been very pleased with the rookie's development so far. He is smart enough to handle the multitude of assignments the Jets have thrown at him, which include playing the nickel, the dime, free safety and special teams.

If McGraw doesn't get the start at safety, he will continue in his role as dime back. CB Jamie Henderson was upgraded to questionable this week, but Edwards said he will not play. Henderson's shoulder is not strong enough yet to do the things the Jets want of him on the field; namely lots of tackling.

T Chris Smith has also been upgraded to questionable. WR Laveranues Coles is probable, after bruising his left knee in practice yesterday. G J.P. Machado sprained his right thumb in practice yesterday, but is also probable for the game, as is G Randy Thomas with a groin pull.
