5 Questions with LaMont Jordan

The Jet backup talks about his role and the possibility of starting this Sunday against Jacksonville.

Q: Are you preparing to have to carry the load this week?

Jordan: I'm just going to go out there and practice. If I do, then great. If I don't, that's just the life of a backup. I just have to wait for my turn and that's really about it.

Q: You said it helps mentally knowing whether you'll start.

Jordan: Yeah, it does. It's a different mental preparation when you're starting or preparing yourself to carry the load. Physically you prepare yourself the same way, but mentally there's a different mindset. There's definitely a different mindset coming into the game.

Q: Have you asked the coaches when you'll know?

Jordan: I can say when I would like to know, but I'll just keep that to myself. There's a time when everybody wants to know, but whenever I find out I find out.

Q: Some guys don't want to know. If you're called to start at the last minute, you just go in there and do what you have to do. Why do you feel differently?

Jordan: Well, to each his own. This is my first situation ever where I'm coming off the bench. In high school I started, in college I started, and for me there's just a different mental preparation coming into the game. When I sit back and visualize myself playing the game, I see myself running off the sideline, Curt (Curtis Martin) running off, and then I go into the huddle. That's how I see things. There's a lot more to playing football and sports than just going out there and do it. You have to visually see yourself doing things, and that's how I see myself doing things.

Q: How tough is that adjustment for the first time, not being the guy?

Jordan: It was tough just for the fact that I'm a competitor. I want to be out there on the field. But if there's one thing that I know, is that you have to know your position on the team. One thing I'm not going to do is sit around and be a complainer about playing time. Me being a competitor, I do want to get out there. But I'm not going to create a distraction on the team and be selfish and say ‘put me on the field' and walk around with an attitude. I'm going to prepare and go out there with that mental outlook.
