Justin Miller and Eric Smith updates

The Jets have two key defensive backs on the injured list, and it could be a while before either one comes back.

Safety Eric Smith and cornerback Justin Miller are both nursing leg injuries. Smith is either dealing with a knee or hamstring problem. Miller has a pulled hamstring.

Both injuries seem to be severe based on the activity of the players on the practice field. Smith is limping severely, and Miller could barely jog when he was running around the field with injured tight end Joe Kowalewski (leg).

Considering Smith couldn't walk following his injury, and needed to be carted off the practice field, it's unlikely he will be back anytime soon. Miller will probably be back before Smith.

These are two key players for the Jets in passing situations. Miller is the Jets dime back, and Smith is the team's third safety. Not only do both players play in obvious passing situations, but also rotate in with the starters every few series.

Help could be on the way. It looks like the Jets are close to signing their first round pick, cornerback Darrelle Revis.

"We have made very substantial progress," said Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum. "Both of Darrelle's agents are in the building."
