Dolphins lose key defensive player

The Miami Dolphins today placed safety Yeremiah Bell on injured reserve and waived defensive end Akbar Gbaja-Biamila, the team announced.

To fill the vacancies, the Dolphins signed free agent safeties Donovin Darius and Lamont Thompson. In addition, the team signed linebacker Kelvin Smith to its practice squad.

Bell suffered a ruptured left Achilles' tendon in the Dolphins' game last Sunday at Washington. He was coming off a 2006 season in which he started the final eight games and finished with 65 tackles, two sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and a team-high 12 passes defensed.
