The Titans worst nightmare

The Titans need to win against the Jets on Sunday to stay in the playoff race. But that is going to be hard for them to do.

Especially with Chad Pennington at quarterback.

Even though Eric Mangini said Kellen Clemens availability (ribs) is a game-time decision, it's quite apparent that Pennington is going to start this game.

Clemens couldn't barely throw the ball in practice this week. Pennington took most of the starting reps.

Pennington starting is really bad news for the Titans.

Not only he is the Jets best quarterback, but he's a wounded lion right now. He's likely going to come out on Sunday and show the Jets, and the rest of the football world, that Tangini made a terrible mistake benching him.

From what we hear, Pennington's legendary work ethic has been taken to another level this week. He has been working overtime, if that is possible, considering how hard he worked before.

And the Titans secondary is very inconsistent, so expect Pennington, after his extensive film study, to find the weaknesses in the Tennessee deep patrol.

Also, this is a homecoming for Pennington, a Tennessee-native. The prideful Knoxville-native will be extra-motivated, once again, if that is possible, to play well on his home turf. He will have a lot of friends and family at the game.

Also helping Pennington and the Jets offense is the absence of the Titans middle linebacker, Ryan Fowler, who was put on IR this week.

Another aid to Pennington will be the Jets defense that has played much better since the bye-week.

Titans quarterback Vince Young has just nine touchdown passes after 14 games. One problem for the second-year signal-caller is that he's not very good at reading defenses, especially complex ones like the Jets.

The Jets defensive coaches are going to try to confuse the youngster with a lot of different looks, and likely add to Young's 16 picks on the season.

One of Young's worst games as a pro was at the end of the last season against New England. He was lost in that game against the Patriots tricky schemes. The Jets play a very similar system to New England, so this is bad news for Young.

Also not helping the Titans offense is that center Kevin Mawae (calf) might not play. He does a lot to help Young on the field, and his backup, Eugene Amato, is somewhat inexperienced. And don't be shocked if Pennington has one of his best games as a Jet.
