Why the Jets elevated Ihedigbo

Aside from the head injury to Eric Smith, there was another reason the Jets promoted practice squad safety James Ihidegbo to the regular roster.

The Cincinnati Bengals attempted to sign Ihedigbo to their regular roster, so if the Jets didn't do that same, they would have lost the promising safety.

Case-in-point is the Jets other new addition to their regular roster - running back Marcus Mason, who they plucked off the Baltimore Ravens practice squad. The Ravens probably hated to lose him, but let him walk because they didn't have the roster flexibility to promote him, especially with all the injuries they have in their secondary.

The Jets had the room on their roster due to season-ending injuries to Jesse Chatman and Erik Ainge.

Mason caught the Jets attention in the preseason, when he had a terrific game against them while with the Washington Redskins.
