Looking at the Films - Part II

Here is Part II of "Looking at the Films," from the Jets-Bills game.

Defensive Line:

The defensive line was average. Mike DeVito had trouble getting off a block on a Marshawn Lynch gain of 13 off right tackle early in the second quarter. In the middle of the fourth quarter, was about to sack J.P. Losman, and forced the QB to throw it away (intentional grounding). On that same drive, DeVito stopped a runner for a loss of one.

Shaun Ellis did some good things. An Ellis QB pressure contributed to a third quarter back by Calvin Pace. Ellis and Jenkins combined to stop Lynch on the line late in the second quarter.

But Jenkins clearly wasn't himself. Remember he was questionable for the game with an injury. Duke Preston pushed Jenkins out of the way on a key third down run right before the two minute warning.

Kenyon Coleman missed a tackle around the line on a Lynch gain of nine off right tackle in the middle of the fourth.

The defensive line did a poor job of on J.P. Losman's second quarter TD run.

Linebacker:

The tackling was inconsistent.

TE Derek Fine dragged a few defenders, including Calvin Pace, on a gain of 12 late first quarter that should have gone for six.

David Harris had a terrific tackle on a pass to Corey McIntyre in the right flat that he stopped for no gain in the late first quarter.

A second quarter QB pressure by David Bowens forced the QB into the hands of Pace for a sack. Pace finished with two sacks.

Bryan Thomas had a terrific play in right flat on a pass to Marshawn Lynch that gained just one yard late in the third. On the next play, Harris stopped Fred Jackson around the same spot in right flat for no gain.

Eric Barton had several good plays against the run.

Secondary:

Abe Elam missed a tackle opportunity on a long run by Marshawn Lynch on the Bills first possession. Elam had a huge strip sack late on a blinside blitz.

Dwight Lowery had a near pick on a pass to Lee Evans in the middle of the first quarter. Kerry Rhodes did a good job stringing out a Fred Jackson sweep to the right sideline, and not allowing the runner to turn up field. The carry only gained two yards. Rhodes missed a tackle opportunity on a Marshawn Lynch gain of 14 late second. Rhodes had a late pick to ice the victory on a Hail Mary.

Darrelle Revis was beat on a quick slant for a touchdown by Steve Jackson. Revis had a really nice run stop on Lynch around the line early in the second quarter. Revis and Ty Law did a poor job of tackling on a Bills late TD – they were dragged into the end zone by Lynch. Revis had a huge pick late.

Hank Poteat picked off a pass that went through the hands of Josh Reed. Johnson got by Poteat on a gain of ll on third down in the fourth quarter.

Special Teams:

Punter Reggie Hodges needs to work on his inside the 20 punting. Too many punts are going into the end zone without much of a chance of being downed. There were two more against Buffalo.

The Bills up-back Keith Ellison executed a successful fake punt.

James Idedigbo had an illegal block in the back, and also overran Roscoe Parrish on his 56-yard punt return.

David Clowney had the key block on a 43-yard return by Leon Washington late in the fourth quarter.

Marques Murrell had a nice coverage stop late.
