Jets hire Pettine as defensive coordinator

Former Baltimore assistant Mike Pettine has been hired as Jets defensive coordinator. The announcement was made by Rex Ryan.

Pettine, the son of the winningest high school football coach in Pennsylvania history, joins the Jets after seven seasons with the Ravens.

He started as a quality control coach/video guy, and eventually joined the football staff.

He knows exactly the type of players Rex will be looking for at linebacker, the position he coached in Baltimore.

"'Tweener' used to be a negative thing - the guy was not big enough for defensive end and too big for linebacker, but we are drawn to those guys," said Pettine. "Guys like Terrell Suggs and Adalius Thomas. In the NFL now, you can't line up anymore where the opponent knows what you are doing. Having linebackers who can rush the passer, play pass defense, play zone, it gives us an advantage.

"Our guys need to learn a lot. We ask a lot out of them."
