He is a huge dude at 6-7, 300 pounds, and has been playing in the 3-4 for eight years now – four seasons with Dallas and four at Virginia under Al Groh.
"Chris is one of the most energetic, enthusiastic, intense, passionate players I have ever coached," said Groh.
Canty has the perfect build and mentality for the 3-4 end position. He's terrific at tying up linemen allowing the linebackers to make plays, but he also makes plenty of plays as well.
Canty is a very good run defender and is very talented at disrupting pass lanes and blocking passes with his long arms.
He's also really smart. He played his senior season as a graduate student at Virginia.
Canty, the son of an ordained minister, also has great character.
And you get the sense that Rex Ryan will use Ellis in more rushing situations like he used end Trevor Price in Baltimore.
So this would create even more of a need for a 3-4 end to do the dirty work.
And the massive Canty, who was born in the Bronx, would be a smart free agent addition for the Jets.
