Here is what Rex Ryan has to say about positional competition in training camp.
"I got to do what's best for this football team," said Ryan. "That's the easy thing. I feel confident that the guy that wins that job -- and comes out of there and is our Opening Day starter -- he'll have earned it. It won't be just because he's had experience or just because he was a first-round pick. The guy's going to have to earn the job. Competition brings out the best in everybody."
That answer was about the quarterback competition, but should apply to every position. It shouldn't matter if Vernon Gholston was a first round pick, and Marques Murrell and Jason Trusnik weren't.
So why did Rex annoint Vernon Gholston the starter at Calvin Pace's OLB position before camp started?
Perhaps he's just saying that for PR reasons, and it will be an open competition.
