Chargers cut Wilhelm - Jets need LB depth

A week before entering training camp, the San Diego Chargers cut a linebacker who has been an integral part of their defense.

Matt Wilhelm, a former starter in San Diego, who is in his prime at the age of 28, is now on the street.

With Calvin Pace out the first four games, and the Jets a little thin at linebacker depth, perhaps they should sign Wilhelm.

Wilhelm, at 6-4, 245 pounds, has perfect 3-4 size, and can play inside or outside.

The Ohio State product was a fourth round pick of San Diego in the 2003 draft.

He was expendable because the Chargers signed former Dallas Cowboy linebacker Kevin Burnett, and also are very high on Tim Dobbins, who both play Wilhelm's position at inside linebacker.
