FieldTurf selected for Giants Stadium

The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority (NJSEA) announced today that it has selected FieldTurf as the new synthetic grass surface for Giants Stadium. The announcement was made by NJSEA President/CEO George Zoffinger.

Today's announcement caps the NJSEA's much-publicized search to find the absolute best turf solution for Giants Stadium, which hosts the home games for the National Football League's (NFL) New York Giants and New York Jets, along with Major League Soccer's (MLS) New York/New Jersey Metro-Stars.

"We are absolutely thrilled with this news," said FieldTurf CEO John Gilman.  "There's no question that Giants Stadium is one of the most storied athletic venues in the world, and to have FieldTurf selected as the turf of choice for such a great facility is really fabulous."

The NJSEA's selection of FieldTurf for Giants Stadium caps an exciting four-week period for the Montreal-based leader in the synthetic grass industry.  On January 23rd, the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) released its bi-annual ranking of NFL stadium fields at a press conference during Super Bowl week in San Diego.  In the survey, completed by 1280 league players representing all 32 teams, FieldTurf's surface at Seahawks Stadium in Seattle was ranked third-best overall.  Incredibly, that placed FieldTurf ahead of 20 natural grass fields used by NFL teams.  It marked the first time that an artificial surface had ever cracked the top eight of the NFLPA's field rankings.  In that 2003 survey, the FieldTurf at Detroit's brand-new Ford Field ranked 11th, despite the fact that less than a third of the league's teams have had the opportunity to play on it.  Ford Field's NFL player rating placed its FieldTurf surface above 11 NFL venues with natural grass fields.  Four other brands of artificial turf are currently used in a total of nine additional NFL stadiums…their rankings were 20th, 22nd, 24th, 26th, 27th (two tied), 29th (two tied) and 31st.

"We are thankful to NJSEA President/CEO George Zoffinger, Senior Vice President/General Manager Tim Hassett, and Director of Operations Erik Stover for selecting FieldTurf, and we are very appreciative of the confidence that they have shown in our product" added Gilman. "By providing a surface that is always ready to perform, FieldTurf's unmatched versatility will greatly expand the frequency and variety of events that the NJSEA can host.  With FieldTurf's patent-pending process of installing and removing sport-specific field markings, it will be simple for Giants Stadium to host a soccer game on a Saturday night, and a football game on Sunday.  At Olympic Stadium in Moscow, which is another of FieldTurf's FIFA-recommended stadium, the Russian Army League clears away snow with snowplows and then plays soccer in -20 degree weather.  And at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, they host boat shows, concerts and baseball games with ease.  When we put this kind of flexibility in the experienced hands of the NJSEA, the sky is the limit.  We are proud to be a part of Giants Stadium's next generation of record-setting success, and we look forward to being a part of the great sports and entertainment memories that will be forged in the years ahead."

With over 550 installations around the world, FieldTurf is not only the choice of the pros, but it is now the most widely-respected surfacing system in high schools, colleges, city parks and recreation centers worldwide.  Beginning in 1997, FieldTurf has dramatically revitalized the artificial surfacing industry, taking turf from the "carpet age" to a grass-like engineered system with a special silica sand, cryogenic rubber and Nike Grind filling.  Additionally, FieldTurf is the very first surface to gain FIFA approval for World Cup play.  FieldTurf has proven to be THE turf of choice for football, soccer, baseball or any other sport or event that is played at today's busy sports facilities.
