Change in Morton status

The Washington Redskins signed Jets kick returner Chad Morton to an offer sheet on Thursday.

The deal includes a $2.5 signing bonus. The Jets can't be happy about this, but expect them to match the offer and retain Morton, one of the league's finest kick returners. Even though the signing bonus is hefty, the contract will still cost the Jets less, in the first year, than the $1.3 million they would have had to pay him if they gave him a first round tender.

The Redskins have acquired a fifth round pick from the Patriots that would fullfill their compensation to the Jets if the New Yorkers don't match the deal.
