First Training Session News & Notes

A look at the news and notes from the Jets' first session of training camp.

Cortland, NY – The first day of Jets' training camp saw the team ready and hungry, earning the praise of quarterback Mark Sanchez who said he "loved the tempo, loved the energy" of the first session. The team picked up where it left off during June's mini-camp, going through the paces in a low-key morning session that focused on working the dust-off the team.

A look at the highlights and news and notes from the morning session:

After catching just one ball all of his rookie season, running back Shonn Greene told during mini-camp that he was working on his pass-catching skills this off-season. On his first chance to show off his skills, Greene crossed his arms and dropped a pass right into his breadbasket…On the next play, LaDainian Tomlinson showed why he is the best pass-catching running back of his generation, snagging a ball from Kevin O'Connell. Tomlinson's grab was made with Bart Scott draped all over him.

In 7 on 7 running drills, rookie Vlad Ducasse absolutely wrestled David Harris to the ground on a play. It was pure brute strength from Ducasse in taking down the veteran linebacker…Dustin Keller looks thicker and more bulky than his listed 248 pounds. It looks like the tight end has added five to eight pounds since mini-camp…Marcus Henry used his size very well in the morning session, snagging some nice balls and his using his frame well against the much smaller cornerbacks on the team. Henry should make the team.

Rookie John Conner will benefit from tutoring by veteran fullback Tony Richardson. Conner will need it – he looked very uncertain in his route running in the morning session…During mini-camp, receiver Braylon Edwards was making non-stop plays. Edwards picked up where he left off, making an impressive one-handed snag on a high pass from Sanchez. More impressive, Edwards did it with cornerback Antonio Cromartie draped all over him…

With the recent signing of Laveranues Coles, one of the receivers needing a big camp is David Clowney. The third year pass catcher dropped an over-the-shoulder effort on a deep ball from Sanchez…Signed late last week, veteran back-up quarterback Mark Brunell looked very impressive. Brunell has a tight spiral and was very mobile. He was the most impressive quarterback on the field. raved about undrafted rookie free agent Jeff Cumberland during mini-camp and he made two nice connections with Brunell. A team source tells us that "they really like what they see in him."…Tight end Matt Mulligan also has taken a significant step forward in his development, becoming a dependable pass catcher and showing tight route running.

Kris Jenkins is on the active/physically unable to perform list…Linebacker Bart Scott had a field day with O'Connell who stutters slightly when giving out his "hut-hut." Scott screamed out to Brunell from across the field to work with the young quarterback on this. "Who is this, Elvis?"
