Kellen Clemens had his moments Wednesday, but inconsistency is what pits him in yet another training camp battle for a job, this time against Kevin O'Connell for the third-string quarterback spot… Clemens' highlight of the day came on a nicely thrown deep pass to wideout Marcus Henry that went 45 yards for a touchdown during 11-on-11 drills. However, Clemens tossed an easy interception to safety Donovan Warren on his very next attempt… His final drive of the day was productive as he went 5-for-6 in a final-minute situation.
With three seconds left on Clemens' drive, Nick Folk attempted a field goal of more than 40 yards but missed… Folk was 4-for-6 on field goal attempts over 40 yards at the end of the morning practice… Special teams practiced in the afternoon. Steve Weatherford and T.J. Conley sent some punts to the returners, but the late session was mostly punt-blocking and block-shedding drills.
In the morning session, Warren popped running back Danny Woodhead in 7-on-7s, which drew smack talk from Bart Scott. Scott had a nice hit of his own when he knocked LaDainian Tomlinson on his rear end as Tomlinson was starting to carry the ball on a swing pass… As Jets Head Coach Rex Ryan said, "Defense dominated practice today."
Quarterback Mark Sanchez completed roughly half of his passes in 11-on-11 drills. Ryan said protection issues were the main reason Sanchez was off at times… O'Connell hit wide receiver Larry Taylor in stride for a 30-yard touchdown strike.
Center Nick Mangold went down after being shaken up during line drills when defensive tackle Sione Pouha jumped the snap count and made contact with Mangold's head. Mangold was held out of the rest of practice, but Ryan said it was precautionary and that Mangold would be fine… Rob Turner took the remainder of the first-team reps at center. Turner got into another scuffle – his third in three days.
