Detroit finds safety and LB in fifth round

The Detroit Lions selected athletic safety Terrence Holt (NC State) and linebacker James Davis (West Virginia) with their two fifth round picks (144th and 137th overall, respectively). Inside are exclusive reviews on each player.

Name: Terrence Holt  School (137 selection overall):  North Carolina St Year:   5Sr

Ht:   6-2  Wt:  208  40:  4.55  Pos:  S

Bio: Three year All-Conference performer  and earned All-America accolades as a senior.   Posted 92 tackles, 3 interceptions and 7 pass defenses last season after 106/1/5 the prior year.  Outstanding special teams player who has multiple punt blocks to his credit and one of the better coverage teams players in the nation four years running.

Pos: Athletic safety who will earn his wage on special teams at the next level.  As a defensive back he displays sideline-to-sideline range, defends the run and flies around the field.  Instinctive, reads the action and also disciplined.

Neg:   Marginal skills in pass coverage; gets beat on fakes, lacks the great move on the ball and does not flash on the scene.

Analysis:   Better making plays up the field than in reverse on defense and limited in his abilities to be used in man-to-man cover schemes.  Many deficiencies will be overlooked as his special teams skills immediately alter the course of a game in his team's favor.
