Mini-Camp: Day 1 w/ Lions' insider Mike Fowler
Below are several mini-camp tidbits from Mike Fowler, who is inside the Lions' mini-camp. Lions' head coach Mariucci did say the team might look for a veteran corner depending on what happens in the camp during the weekend. The team is still looking to sign another veteran receiver.

Running backs
Avon Cobourne showed some good quickness and the ability to catch the ball; made three catches out of the backfield that would have gone for five to seven yard gains

Luke Staley appears healthy, quick and strong.  Took a couple of running plays up the middle, made some quick cuts and exploded through the line.  Will be a factor. James Stewart is still No. 1; rushed very well, caught the ball; made some guys miss

Wideouts
David Kircus appeared to be working more on getting the patterns down but made one sensational leaping, tumbling reception.

Charles Rogers dropped the first throw from Harrington but that was it.  Showed amazing speed off the line and caught everything else thrown at him, including balls in the seam in traffic

Bill Schroeder was phenomenal.  This guy was the best player on the field.  He torched every defensive back that tried to cover him including Dre' Bly twice, Andre Goodman a couple of times and Chris Cash.  He looked All-world

Newcomer Report ...

Casey Fitzsimmons caught a couple of balls and showed decent speed

Boss Bailey has tremendous speed, but was out of place a couple of times.  Richard Smith (linebackers coach) will work to get him into the right place in their schemes.  He's running with the first team. Brian Williams was nursing an injury and didn't particpate in several drills.

Earl Holmes seems to have solidified the middle, knew where to be and what to do

Curt Anes didn't get many reps Friday. Facing difficult odds, Anes said if he doesn't make the roster that he hopes to catch on with either an NFL Europe team or the Lions' practice squad (if he clears waivers).

Artose Pinner didn't work out (broken leg)

James Davis and Cory Redding looked like they were trying to find their way. Neither stood out.

More coming tomorrow!
