Talk About the Lions with OTHER fans at: LIONSTALK.com
Adrian Donofrio - LionsFans.com
The wait is finally over.
After months of courting, the Lions have agreed to terms with former Bear and former Cowboy defensive lineman Alonzo Spellman.
Official terms have not been disclosed, but league sources have reported the tentative deal to be near the league minimum with incentive based bonuses on top of the base salary.
Spellman has had an extremely public life, even more so than the average NFL player. Spelman has been known for some off the field hijinx, which includes sleeping in a car that was parked in the fast lane of a freeway.
The Lions, however, are gettig a free sneak peek at Spellman, because they won't have to pay his salary for a month, giving the Lions a 30 day guarantee of sorts.
Alonzo, 29, has been courted by the Lions for months now, with talks going on and off like California's electricity. Spellman has 43 career sacks, with 21 tackles and 5 sacks last year with the Cowboys.
It remains to be seen if Spellman is worth all the trouble of the months' worth of talking, but they will find out in camp. Spellman will undoubtebly bolster an already well above average line, for a very nice price, too. What remains to be seen is if his off the field tensions have cooled. The Lions think he's worth all the risk, though, along with a minimum pay salary.
