Batch Benched

Paul Wezner -

After one pathetic performance by Lion's starting Quarterback Charlie Batch, Lions' Head Coach Marty Mornhinweg decided he had enough and benched Batch in favor of backup Quarterback Ty Detmer.

While few expected a move to happen this early, most felt that when Mornhinweg traded for Detmer that he was trading for a starter, not a backup.

Detmer has experience in the West Coast Offense, and already seemed to have a better grasp of the offense in one week of practice than what Batch had gotten in more than 6 months. Detmer has also been much more accurate in practice, something Batch struggled with in the game against Green Bay.

"Ty will give a better opportunity to win football games," Mornhinweg said in a press release. "He will add a feel to this game within this offensive structure. His decision making, his accuracy and his timing and are all at high level."

While nothing will be official until after the season, this is more than likely the end of Charlie Batch’s career as the Lions' Quarterback. Batch will still be the backup Quarterback, but that’s because 3rd-stringer Mike McMahon, a rookie,   isn’t ready for live game action yet.
