Training Camp Update and Analysis

In-depth training camp update from, including Player of Week, Battle of the Week, Rookie Report, an updated list at the PUP list and much more. Insider analysis on training camp inside. (Sneak Peak: Dan Wilkinson update, Cash versus Goodman, Semple back in action & more)

The Lions are doing a little training camp shopping, looking for help at defensive tackle, just in case Luther Elliss isn't sufficiently recovered from a torn pectoral muscle to take his place in the lineup by the start of the regular season.

Dan (Big Daddy) Wilkinson visited the team Friday. Wilkinson is in no hurry, however, and neither are the Lions, so nothing was done in the way of negotiations.

Lions president Matt Millen believes Wilkinson would fit nicely beside 350-pound defensive tackle Shaun Rogers if Elliss isn't ready, but the price would have to be right. Probably somewhere in the $1.5 million to $2 million range.

BATTLE OF THE WEEK: CB Chris Cash vs. CB Andre Goodman for the starting left corner job. Cash, a 2002 sixth-round pick who is aggressive in coverage and run support, is a bulldog and just won't give up the starting job. Goodman, a third-round pick in the same draft, has better coverage skills and technique, and is making a bid for the job but hasn't been able -- so far -- to dislodge Cash.

OTHER BATTLE FRONTS: OL Tony Semple, a 10-year veteran, came off the PUP last week and will work at both guard and center, competing for a backup job and giving the Lions experienced depth at both positions; RB Shawn Bryson is coming off the PUP list this week to join the fray at the RB positions, where he will compete with Luke Staley, Rafael Cooper, Autry Denson and rookie Avon Cobourne to backup RB James Stewart.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: CB Chris Cash -- A year ago, he was a rookie -- a sixth-round draft pick from USC -- competing for a roster spot. He was supposed to be the caretaker for a cornerback job expected to go to third-round pick Andre Goodman. Even when Goodman was ready to play, however, Cash held onto the job and he has played well again in training camp, giving every indication he will not give up the job this year.

ROOKIE REPORT: WR Charles Rogers missed most of last week's work because of a dislocated ring finger on his left hand, but he is expected to return to work sometime this week ... OLB Boss Bailey is showing all the speed and coverage ability the Lions expected of him but it's still questionable whether he is physical enough to play over the bigger TEs in the NFL ... DL Cory Redding is working at DT instead of the DE position with which he is more familiar. He's promising but has a lot yet to learn about using his hands ... RB Artose Pinner is on PUP, recovering from a broken leg suffered in the Senior Bowl, and is likely to stay there into the regular season ... S Terrence Holt is making a good early impression in camp, both in the defensive secondary and on special teams ... LB James Davis is getting his share of reps at MLB with veterans Earl Holmes and Wali Rainer but his rookie contributions probably will be on special teams ... WR David Kircus hasn't slowed down since arriving in the first minicamp three months ago. He catches the ball well and has outstanding speed ... OT Ben Johnson is learning just how difficult it is to play against NFL d-linemen, and it's only training camp ... CB Blue Adams resumed practice late in the week after missing several days because of a bad bruise above his knee ... FB Brandon Drumm has good FB size and is showing his ability as a blocker in training camp drills ... WR Travis Anglin has played well in camp but there is so much competition at the WR position it will be tough to win a roster spot ... RB Avon Cobourne, an undrafted rookie, doesn't have great speed but has some elusiveness and could contribute as a returner on special teams.

INJURY REPORT: The Lions PUP list is dwindling OL Tony Semple joining the list of the active participants and it appears TE Mikhael Ricks (knee) and RB Shawn Bryson (knee) will join him this week. Still on the PUP list are major contributors DT Luther Elliss (pectoral muscle), DE Kalimba Edwards (hip and hernia) and LB Brian Williams (knee), as well as rookie RB Artose Pinner, who is not yet recovered from a broken ankle suffered in the Senior Bowl.
