(ALLEN PARK) - He isn't going to do it right now, but he is going to do it. Lions head coach Steve Mariucci confirmed today that he will eventually call former Chicago Bears head coach Dick Jauron and talk to him about becoming a member of his staff.
Mariucci said at his Monday afternoon press conference that he wanted to let "things cool down a bit" before talking to Jauron. Mariucci reflected on his firing from the San Francisco 49'ers a year ago and said he wanted to give his old friend some time to breathe.
Meanwhile, interim head coach Bo Pellini is expected to be named full time head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers but the fallout is that Detroit running backs coach and former Nebraska star Tom Rathman would become the team's offensive coordinator and install the West Coast offense at Nebraska.
The Nebraska Omaha World reported that a person who appeared to be Rathman landed at a remote airport landing strip outside of Lincoln. Rathman has repeatedly denied rumors that he would leave the Lions to join the Cornhuskers' staff. But the newest line out of Lincoln has Rathman being named, not offensive coordinator, but head coach of the Cornhuskers following tonight's Alamo Bowl.
Pat Morris, the San Francisco 49'ers offensive line coach is expected to be named the Detroit Lions offensive line coach early next month. Mariucci is expected to meet with his entire staff after meeting with Lions owner William Clay Ford, Sr. and president and GM Matt Millen in Florida later this week.
Once his plans for a revamped coaching staff gets Ford's seal of approval, Mariucci is expected to dismiss as many as five members of his staff and assemble a group more to his liking.
Rumored to be in Mariucci's crosshairs are Mauck, defensive coordinator Kurt Schottenheimer, defensive backs coach Ray Horton, wide receivers coach Bobby Williams and defensive assistant Don Clemons.
