Mariucci Completes Staff

Lions' head coach Steve Mariucci completed the hiring of his coaching staff with the addition of George Catavolos as secondary coach. The Lions will now turn their complete attention toward the impending free agency, including cornerback Champ Bailey.

(ALLEN PARK) - Lions head coach Steve Mariucci has finally settled his off-season coaching staff shake-up by hiring George Catavolos as his defensive backs coach.  The move finalizes an tenuous off-season for the Lions which saw four assistants leave the team due to lack of production.

Catavolos is a 19-year NFL veteran, who most recently coached the Washington Redskins secondary prior to being replaced by new head coach Joe Gibbs.  He formerly worked for both the Indianapolis Colts and Carolina Panthers.

The move would also likely smooth any transition that Redskins corner Champ Bailey would have if he left the Redskins for Detroit in free agency.  The Lions have made no secret about their love for the 6' 1" lockdown corner.  His brother, Rodney (Boss) Bailey is the starting strong side linebacker for Detroit.

The two have been open about their desire to play for the same NFL team they way they did in college at the University of Georgia.  Champ is said to be fond of Catavolos.

The problem is that Champ Bailey is expected to have the franchise tag slapped on him by the Redskins, severely limiting his ability to move in free agency.  If for some reason that doesn't happen, the Lions would like to be first in line to acquire his services.
