The good news: The Detroit Lions will likely have their starting secondary on the field Saturday when the team takes on the Baltimore Ravens for its third pre-season contest.
Starting cornerbacks Dre' Bly and Fernando Bryant will both likely see playing time, giving Lions' head coach Steve Mariucci his first look at the pair in live game action.
The bad news: The injury bug isn't exactly going away.
Defensive end Kalimba Edwards has experienced pain stemming from a hernia injury suffered a year ago, and running back Olandis Gary will undergo shoulder surgery.
Edwards was expected to provide a spark this season from the defensive end position, but has been lackluster throughout camp and the pre-season.
"Kalimba is a little sore so we're going to hold him out of this game," said Mariucci. "He's had a lot of work so hopefully he's just tired from camp and some soreness that some rest will calm down and we'll get him back."
Edwards recently recovered from hernia surgery, an injury that can occasionally flare up.
Gary, meanwhile, had been experiencing a nagging pain in his shoulder, and it was diagnosed a few days ago as a cyst. "(Olandis) is having surgery on his shoulder," Mariucci, "He hasn't been on IR yet. They're talking about having surgery in South Carolina.
"He's going to fly back home today and then he's going to fly down there within the week."
Gary's surgery will likely end his season.
Fullback's Paul Smith and starter Cory Schlesinger will also be held out Saturday's contest, along with linebacker's Alex Lewis and James Davis. All four are expected to return in time for the season opener, September 12, at Chicago.
