Honolulu Blue: Six Lions Given Pro Bowl Nods

ALLEN PARK - Six Detroit Lions were named to the Pro Bowl including three starters, corner Dre' Bly, returner Eddie Drummond and defensive tackle Shaun Rogers. Also named as alternates were guard Damien Woody, fullback Cory Schlesinger and rookie running back Kevin Jones.

Jones was the biggest surprise, after four consecutive 100-yard rushing performances moved him to within shouting distance (983 yards) of a 1,000 yard season, his fellow players are clearly recognizing him as the top rookie running back in the league.

Bly's selection was a mild surprise as a starter. After missing three starts due to injury, the six-year veteran started slowly before rounding into form over the last few weeks, but was seemingly voted in on the strength of last year's stellar performance and his play of late.

Drummond and Rogers selections as starter come as no surprise. Drummond was clearly the best returner in the NFL before a hip injury in the team's loss to Indianapolis cost him the last three contests.

Rogers has been among the most dominant defensive forces in football. His combination of power and speed are among the most disruptive in the NFL. Every opposing team has had to account for Rogers, either via double teaming or going away from the 6-foot-4, 320-pound defensive tackle. Last year Rogers was named an alternate, this year he is a starter.

Schlesinger was named for the third consecutive year as an alternate at the fullback position.

Detroit equaled the Minnesota Vikings who announced they also had three players named to the Pro Bowl squad, quarterback Daunte Culpepper, center Matt Birk and defensive tackle Kevin Williams.

The Philadelphia Eagles had a record nine players voted to the starting Pro Bowl team. The entire squad will be named at 4:00 pm EST and on ESPN's Ameriquest Pro Bowl show airing at 7:00pm EST.
