It wasn't the name most Detroit Lions' critics wanted to see, but that didn't stop Matt Millen & Co. from hiring Kurt Schottenheimer as the team's new defensive coordinator.

Schottenheimer, who will replace the recently fired Vince Tobin, served under his brother (Marty Schottenheimer) while with the Washington Redskins last season.

Although the seasoned defensive instructor has ample experience under his belt, and his Redskins' defense finished in the top 10 last season, he doesn't harbor the prestige that many other candidates packaged.

Most prominently, of which, was Baltimore Ravens' defensive assistant Jack Del Rio -- who was hired by the Carolina Panthers on Saturday.

Schottenheimer will have the intricate task of revamping a Detroit defense that finished 26th last season. Schottenheimer is recognized as producing solid -- and consistent -- defenses. He was asked to return to the Redskins by new head coach Steve Spurrier.
