Former Lions' middle linebacker Stephen Boyd, who was released earlier this year due to
salary cap restraints, has retired.
After joining the team in 1995, the Boston College standout spent the past 7 seasons with Detroit, tallying 370 tackles and 6 sacks. He represented the Lions in the 1999 Pro Bowl.
Boyd, 29, recorded his worst season since his rookie campaign last year, as chronic back complications forced him to miss the Lions' remaining 12 contests.
He finished with just 17 tackles.
Boyd had received interest from the Green Bay Packers and Houston Texans since his release, but both teams were ultimately scared off by his back problems.
Houston signed former Lions' LB Allen Aldridge earlier this week.
