Lions near completion of coaching staff

ALLEN PARK - Lions head coach Rod Marinelli completed his coaching staff this afternoon by announcing the hiring of four new assistants to his staff.

Former Lions tight end Pat Carter returns to the team as tight ends coach, former Lions intern Shawn Jefferson remains as an offensive assistant, Wilbert Montgomery [Montgomery bio] signs on as running backs coach and Joe Cullen joins the team as defensive line coach.

Earlier today, Marinelli announced the long-awaited hiring of former St. Louis Rams head coach Mike Martz (see "Lions ink Martz as offensive coordinator") as the teams offensive coordinator. Reports of Marinelli having reservations about Martz personality proved to be without foundation.

Marinelli had settled in on Martz after meeting with him at the Senior Bowl and then again in Allen Park during Super Bowl week. Financial considerations were the main sticking point and talks ceased for a brief cooling off period. After Millen made contact with Martz representatives Friday afternoon, it took just a few days to iron out the details to bring him into the fold.

Martz will also serve as the teams quarterbacks coach.

The new coaches join defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson on the Detroit staff along with Phil Snow (linebackers) Don Clemons (defensive assistant), Chuck Priefer (special teams), Stan Kwan (assistant special teams) and Adam Gase (coaching assistant)

Detroit lone remaining vacancy is secondary or defensive backs coach, the team may also add a quality control coach.
